HUNTING VALLEY, Ohio (AP) - A northeastern Ohio university’s farm is now providing food for animals at Cleveland’s zoo.
Case Western Reserve University’s Squire Valleevue Farm in Hunting Valley east of Cleveland provides food for campus dining halls. But it has also started delivering food to the zoo’s animal kitchens.
The (Cleveland) Plain Dealer (https://bit.ly/1g1E2Bf ) reports that farm horticulturalist Christopher Bond approached the zoo last fall about providing food for its animals.
The zoo has placed a weekly order that includes 57 pounds of endive, 78 pounds of dandelion greens and 209 pounds of romaine lettuce. Bond also plans to dedicate 20 acres to produce hay for the zoo’s grazers.
The university has owned the 277-acre farm since 1919 and later acquired a portion of another farm and a few small parcels.
