A top Democrat in New Jersey’s Legislature said Sunday it is “far too early” to conclude whether Gov. Chris Christie knew about toll-lane closings that caused massive traffic problems near the George Washington Bridge and sparked a political scandal that could roil the 2016 presidential race.
“We haven’t had a chance to talk to some of the key players,” Assemblyman John Wisniewski, a Democrat who is leading legislative probes into the issue, told ABC’s This Week with George Stephanopoulous.
His comments came on the heels of an internal review that cleared Mr. Christie of wrongdoing and placed blame on top deputies in his office and at the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey for the lane closings in Fort Lee, N.J., for several days in September.
Mr. Christie’s critics have cautioned that third-party investigations, including one by federal prosecutors, will ultimately get to the bottom of the issue.
Randy Mastro, the lawyer who led Mr. Christie’s in-house review, told ABC their investigation was exhaustive and will, “at the end of the day,” be judged on its merits against parallel investigations.
