YANKTON, S.D. (AP) - A study has determined that Yankton will need hundreds more houses and rental properties in the next five years.

The Yankton Area Progressive Growth group commissioned the study last year in response to concerns about a housing shortage. The Daily Press & Dakotan reports (https://bit.ly/1fVbb5E ) that results were released last week.

The study predicts a need for between 40 and 50 homes per year during the next five years in and around Yankton. It also identifies the need for between 130 and 160 rental units in the city of about 14,500 people.

Yankton Community Development Director Dave Mingo says there has been a drop in housing starts in recent years, and he hopes the needs identified in the study will give developers confidence to build.
