LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) - Icy roads and snow accumulations closed schools and government offices across Kentucky on Monday.
Up to 4 inches of snow fell in eastern Kentucky and some parts of central Kentucky, the National Weather Service reported.
Parts of eastern Kentucky remained under a winter storm warning until late Monday afternoon, with additional snowfall and temperatures below freezing that could bring the total to 6 inches in some areas, the weather service said.
Kentucky State Police urged motorists to use caution while traveling and keep a watch out for stranded drivers.
The weather and “extremely dangerous road conditions” in Pike County prompted officials there to declare a state of emergency Monday morning. Most county offices were closed and officials in the far eastern Kentucky county asked residents to stay off the roads.
State lawmakers in the Kentucky General Assembly took the day off because of the weather. The House and Senate are scheduled to reconvene Tuesday afternoon in Frankfort.
The snow shut down elementary and secondary schools and college campuses across the state. Many announced closings Sunday night ahead of the storm. Classes at the University of Kentucky, Western Kentucky University and Centre College were canceled Monday. The University of Louisville said classes after 3 p.m. would go on as scheduled.
The snow that fell overnight dumped about 3 inches in Louisville, while areas of Frankfort reported 4 inches, National Weather Service meteorologist Ryan Sharp said. The Bowling Green area reported 3 inches of sleet.
