PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) - The Portland School Board has approved a new contract with the city’s teachers after 10 months of negotiations that brought Oregon’s largest school district close to a strike.
The Oregonian reports (https://is.gd/JDY5Hd ) the board voted 7-0 on Monday to OK the three-year agreement.
Members of the teachers union gave their approval in votes counted last week.
Tentative agreement was reached just two days before the district’s 2,900 teachers were ready to talk out. The strike would have affected the families of nearly 48,000 students.
The district promised to hire 150 teachers to reduce class sizes. Teachers agreed to add two more days to the school year. Teachers will receive 2.3 percent annual raises for three years. The district also agreed to continue paying for 93 percent of health care premiums.
