ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) - Members of the Alaska Air National Guard have rescued five people who were stranded after breaking through an ice floe in a river.
State Department of Military and Veterans Affairs officials say the people were on the Knik River when their all-terrain vehicle became stuck in the ice floe.
Officials say the stranded people called Alaska State Troopers, who were unable to respond because of night restrictions and the lack of hoisting equipment. Troopers contacted the Alaska Rescue Coordination Center late Saturday night.
The guard sent a helicopter crew, who rescued the stranded party early Sunday by hoisting them up one at a time.
The people rescued were taken to the Mat-Su Regional Medical Center, where they were released to troopers.
Guard spokeswoman Kalei Rupp says no one was injured.
