MILAN (AP) - Italy coach Cesare Prandelli has changed his mind and is now more seriously considering a contract extension with the national team.

Prandelli appears intrigued with the idea of expanded powers involving Italy’s youth national teams and more influence over Serie A clubs.

He says “regarding the contract renewal, something has changed. Now I’m thinking about an extension. We’ll discuss it mid-March.”

Prandelli took over the national team from Marcello Lippi after Italy was eliminated in the first round of the 2010 World Cup. He led the squad to the final of the 2012 European Championship and his contract is due to expire after this year’s World Cup.

Prandelli adds “if I’m going to be involved, the Italian league and federation will have to support this project together with the clubs.”
