Police arrested at least 300 anti-Keystone XL protesters who took to grounds outside the White House to press President Obama to turn down the pipeline project.
The protests were staged Sunday by students and started at Georgetown University. They marched toward the White House, stopping for a time outside of Secretary of State John Kerry’s house.
More than 80 different colleges took part in the protest, with a followup rally set for San Francisco on Monday, Politico reported.
“The youth really understand the traditional methods of creating change are not sufficient … so we needed to escalate,” Aly Johnson-Kurtz, a Smith College freshman who helped organize the protest, told Politico.
About 1,200 participated in Sunday’s demonstration, event organizers said. Many of the protesters also took part in civil disobedience training the day before to help keep the rally peaceful, according to Politico.
