DANVILLE, Va. (AP) - Danville has received state approval to relocate unmarked graves discovered at the site of a planned industrial park.
The city’s Office of Economic Development plans to move the graves to another section of the park. Historic markers would be placed at the new location.
Historic preservationists oppose the plan. Archeologists found foundations at the site dating to the late 1700s that are believed to be from a plantation built by Thomas Fearn, one of Danville’s founders.
The Danville Register & Bee (https://bit.ly/OSLKIo ) reports that the Virginia Department of Historic Resources has approved the graves’ relocation.
Sonja Ingram with Preservation Virginia says the decision will be appealed to circuit court.
Preservation Virginia included the site on its 2013 List of Endangered Sites.
