PELLSTON, Mich. (AP) - It’s bitterly cold across Michigan as officials warn people to take precautions to avoid frostbite.

The National Weather Service reports the temperature dropped to 29 degrees below zero Monday morning in the northern Lower Peninsula community of Pellston and minus 24 at Grayling.

It was minus 16 at Traverse City, minus 7 at Grand Rapids and minus 3 at Lansing. It was 2 above at Detroit, where the high Monday reached only 14 degrees.

The low reached minus 25 at Ironwood in the western Upper Peninsula.

The weather service says Monday’s highs reached 20 at Iron Mountain in western upper Michigan, with temperatures in the rest of the state hitting single digits or the teens.

The cold’s expected to ease somewhat Tuesday, with highs statewide in the teens and 20s.
