MEDFORD, Ore. (AP) - Authorities say some people are being duped by a phone scam involving callers posing as Internal Revenue Service officials.

The Treasury Inspector General for Taxpayer Administration reports an estimated $1 million has been lost to the scam that has taken in thousands of victims nationwide.

A news release says more than 20,000 such calls have been reported and they have been coming from nearly every state, including Oregon.

Anyone who receives a suspicious call from someone posing as an IRS representative should report the incident to Treasury Inspector General at 800-366-4484.

Complaints also can be filed with the Federal Trade Commission at www.FTC.gov. Add “IRS Telephone Scam” to the complaint comments.
