ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) - The U.S. Naval Academy says a midshipman has died after a skateboarding accident last weekend.

Academy officials say 20-year-old Hans Loewen of Hampstead, N.C., died Saturday while in a coma at the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore with his family by his side.

Loewen was injured in a skateboarding accident March 22 while on a camping trip with other midshipmen at Assateague State Park. He was treated at the scene and then taken to the Baltimore trauma center.

In a statement, Naval Academy Superintendent Michael Miller said Loewen was a vibrant midshipman who lived life to the fullest.

Loewen was a midshipman third class and oceanography major at the academy. He was involved with the academy’s adventure racing team, rock climbing club and the American Nuclear Society.
