WASHINGTON (AP) - The District of Columbia mayor’s race is injecting uncertainty into the first overhaul of public school boundaries in four decades.

The Washington Post (https://wapo.st/1dDX2LC ) reports officials next week plan to release the first proposals for changing where students attend school. The final say will rest with whichever mayoral candidate wins.

Outdated boundaries are being updated after school closings and demographic changes.

Mayor Vincent Gray is scheduled to announce new boundaries in September. They would not take effect until fall 2015, long after the next mayor is in office.

None of Gray’s challengers will commit to any timetable for maintaining the process.

Councilmember Muriel Bowser, who is Gray’s leading challenger, says decisions will have to be made about school boundaries. But she says it doesn’t have to be done by 2015.
