FORT WAYNE, Ind. (AP) - General Electric Corp. will shutter its last two remaining Fort Wayne operations early next year, costing about 90 workers their jobs.
Friday’s announcement came after a 60-day bargaining period with the International Union of Electrical Workers and the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers.
The Journal Gazette reports (https://bit.ly/1oc8VNs ) GE said in its statement that the union’s proposals fell short.
The Fairfield, Conn.-based company once had more than 10,000 workers in Fort Wayne and has had a presence in the city since 1911.
But its two remaining Fort Wayne operations, a motor testing lab and an executive center, will close Jan. 15, eliminating the last 88 GE jobs in Fort Wayne.
The fate of the company’s 32-acre property and 13 largely vacant buildings has not been determined.
