ROYAL OAK, Mich. (AP) - Detroit Zoo staff members and volunteers plan to deliver school supplies to rural communities along the Amazon River in Peru.

The trip begins on Saturday and goes to April 7. It marks the 16th year the zoo is leading an expedition to the Peruvian rainforest.

The materials being given out were purchased with donations to the Peru Adopt-A-School program.

Volunteers are traveling to Peru at their own expense. They are to pass out books, paper and supplies to students in remote villages, enabling them to attend school and achieve a basic education with a focus on conservation. Every school also is to receive a simple water purification system to provide clean drinking water.
