LA CROSSE, Wis. (AP) - The chancellor at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse says a new report that ranks his school first in the country for alcohol arrests should send a message to students about the school’s tough stance against alcohol.
Chancellor Joe Gow said that he doesn’t think the alcohol situation at his school is worse than anywhere else in the country, the La Crosse Tribune (https://bit.ly/1jetsfD ) reported Friday. Gow also said the report illustrates what he calls a societal problem with alcohol.
“If you’re going to come here and break the law, we are going to arrest you,” Gow said. “I think that’s a positive message.”
Gow also pointed out that the report might include arrests from the town’s annual Oktoberfest, which could have skewed the results.
“We are doing all we can to address this very complex problem,” Gow said.
The report comes from Rehabs.com, an addiction resource, and includes new rankings based on data from 2012. UW-La Crosse moved up from No. 9 the year before.
Eight other UW institutions made the top 50. UW-Oshkosh topped the list in 2011 but moved to No. 9 in the latest report.
Also in the top 50 were UW-Stout (18), UW-Stevens Point (22), UW-Madison (23), UW-Eau Claire (31), UW-River Falls (33), UW-Milwaukee (45) and UW-Green Bay (46).
