EAST LANSING, Mich. (AP) - A new exhibit at Michigan State University looks at the threats of extinction or population loss that turtles face around the globe.
The MSU Museum says that turtles survived the great extinction that wiped out dinosaurs 65 million years ago, as well as multiple ice ages.
New threats that threaten the reptiles today are the subject of an exhibit called “Turtles in Trouble” that opens with a reception from 3-5 p.m. Saturday. It runs through Sept. 21.
MSU Museum naturalist Jim Harding says “at least two-thirds of turtle species worldwide are declining and threatened with extinction, and several species have become extinct in the wild over just the last few years.”
He says people are transforming turtle habitat and using turtles as food.
