SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - A Wal-Mart store in Heber City has been evacuated after authorities in a store bathroom found a possible pipe bomb with an escaped prison inmate on Friday.

A bomb squad is investigating the metal pipe with electric wires and police have taken the inmate into custody.

Wasatch County sheriff’s Chief Deputy Jared Rigby says the 35-year-old man was working on a Utah State Prison crew to remove asbestos at the former Wasatch High School when he went missing around 11 a.m. Friday.

The crew supervisor told police he feared the inmate was depressed and could be suicidal.

Rigby says a Wal-Mart customer told police that a man matching the inmate’s description was asking shoppers for rides down Provo Canyon.

The Utah County Bomb Squad is investigating the potential pipe bomb.
