Florida congressional representatives visit Haiti

MIAMI (AP) - A bipartisan delegation of South Florida’s congressional representatives is visiting Haiti.

Republicans Ileana Ros-Lehtinen and Mario Diaz-Balart and Democrat Frederica Wilson made the trip Friday to examine the findings of a report commissioned through the House Foreign Affairs Committee. The report reviewed the U.S. Agency for International Development’s efforts in Haiti since an earthquake devastated the Caribbean country in 2010.

Ros-Lehtinen said it was important to review the progress of U.S. reconstruction efforts in Haiti and “urge for new free, fair and transparent elections this year.”

Diaz-Balart said he was eager to meet with Haitian government officials and the country’s business leaders to discuss ways to restore stability and create prosperity throughout Haiti.

Wilson emphasized the importance of transparency and accountability in the reconstruction efforts.
