SAYRE, Okla. (AP) - Authorities say a Beckham County deputy shot and killed a man following a foot chase and struggle with the man in Sayre.

The Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation says 43-year-old Larry Dale Plaster of Sayre was shot by the deputy after he hit the deputy with an axe when the deputy tried to arrest him Wednesday.

The deputy’s name was not released.

The OSBI says Plaster had first run from two Sayre police officers who tried to arrest him on felony charges. The deputy was in the area and joined the chase and caught up with Plaster when Plaster hit him with the axe.

OSBI spokeswoman Jessica Brown told KECO that a report will be sent to the district attorney to determine whether the shooting was justified.
