ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) - The New York Legislature’s top Democrat says he expects that a state budget deal is near.
Gov. Andrew Cuomo and legislative leaders are working against a deadline to get a budget approved before the new state fiscal year Tuesday.
Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver tells reporters after a two-hour meeting with Cuomo and legislative leaders Thursday that they are moving toward a framework and he expects a deal today. He said he needs to check with lawmakers before negotiations resume.
An agreement would clear the way for the Legislature to vote on legislation Monday, since bills usually need to sit on lawmakers’ desks for three days.
