LANSING, Mich. (AP) - Gov. Rick Snyder has signed bills that redistribute six judgeships in Michigan courts, eliminating five seats in Detroit and shifting them to the suburbs and western Michigan.
The bills signed Thursday implement criteria from a 2013 state court administrator’s report.
The reports are issued every two years and use caseloads to decide where judges are needed. The Legislature must approve any judgeship changes.
Snyder’s office says House Bills 5121-5125 remove four judgeships from Wayne County Circuit Court in Detroit and one each from Detroit and Saginaw district courts.
The bills add three judgeships in suburban Detroit - two in Macomb County Circuit Court and one in Oakland County Circuit Court. They add one seat each in Kent County Circuit Court and district courts in Van Buren and Kent counties.
