COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - Police say a crash on a bridge over the Congaree River that killed two people was intentional.

Acting Columbia Police Chief Melron Kelly said Thursday his agency had closed its investigation into the Jan. 16 crash.

Authorities have said an SUV driven by 35-year-old Denzel E. Whyatt Jr. crashed through a guardrail and drove off a bridge between Cayce and Columbia just before 10 p.m. Whyatt was pronounced dead at the scene. A passenger, 40-year-old Shannon Y. Mickens, was pronounced dead at a hospital.

Kelly says officers can’t definitively say which passenger caused the crash. But he says the fact that the driver accelerated through the guardrail leads investigators to believe that the crash happened purpose.
