CONCORD, N.H. (AP) - U.S. Sen. Jeanne Shaheen is urging federal authorities to expedite approval of the waivers needed to implement New Hampshire’s plan to use Medicaid funds to buy private insurance for 50,000 poor adults.

The New Hampshire House voted Tuesday to send the plan to Gov. Maggie Hassan, who could sign the bill as early as this week. Shaheen has asked the Department of Health and Human Services to work with New Hampshire to develop and approve any waiver needed to ensure a successful expansion.

Shaheen wrote Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius Tuesday that many of the adults eligible for help obtaining insurance are the working poor.

The expansion plan would use federal funding to buy private insurance for adults making less than 138 percent of the federal poverty limit.
