ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) - U.S. Sen. Charles Schumer says the Obama administration’s budget proposal for the upcoming fiscal year would slash funding for more than 340 critical sewer upgrades in New York, many of them mandated for the state’s aging infrastructure.
The New York Democrat says the spending plan would cut funding for the Clean Water State Revolving Loan Fund by $430 million, which would mean about $40 million less for New York.
More than 340 projects in upstate New York and Long Island have pending applications, with many more waiting for future funding.
Schumer is urging colleagues on the Senate Appropriations Committee to provide level or increased funding, saying the overall sewer program’s budget has decreased steadily the past few years.
