Former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin endorsed state Sen. Joni Ernst campaign for the U.S. Senate in the Iowa GOP primary, saying she will champion a small government agenda in Washington, D.C.
“She’s been a fighter for freedom both in and out of uniform,” Mrs. Palin said on her Facebook page. “Iowa — come together and send this Midwest Mama Grizzly roaring to Washington on her Harley so she can join with the good guys to get our country back on track!”
Mrs. Ernst, a veteran of the Iraq war and member of the Iowa Army National Guard, is running against businessman Mark Jacobs, former U.S. Attorney Matt Whitaker and radio commentator Sam Clovis for the GOP nomination.
The winner is expected to face off against Rep. Bruce Braley, a Democrat, in the November race to replace retiring Sen. Tom Harkin.
Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney also has endorsed Mrs. Ernst.
Mrs. Palin said Mrs. Ernst has a track record of cutting spending and those “pork cutting” skills are needed in Congress.
“She has pledged to defund Obamacare, limit the size of government, and protect life,” Mrs. Palin said. “As a concealed-weapon license holder, she will fight to defend our Second Amendment rights — the NRA has given her an ’A’ rating.”
