ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) - New York state is getting more than $28 million from the federal government to fund fish and wildlife conservation and recreation projects.
That’s the Empire State’s share of the nearly $1.1 billion in excise tax revenues paid by sportsmen and sportswomen that the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service will distribute to state fish and wildlife agencies nationwide. Secretary of the Interior Sally Jewell announced the funding Tuesday.
The Fish and Wildlife Service allocates the funds to all 50 states and territories through two programs funded by excise taxes generated by the sale of sporting firearms, ammunition, archery equipment, fishing equipment and tackle, and fuel taxes on motorboats and small engines.
New York state will receive more than $20.5 million from the Pittman-Robertson Wildlife Restoration fund and nearly $8 million from the Dingell-Johnson Sport Fish Restoration program.
