OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) - A nationally known scholar of Islam is slated to speak at the Oklahoma chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations’ annual awards banquet next month.

John L. Esposito - author of books such as “Islamophobia: The Challenge of Pluralism in the 21st Century” - will headline the April 5 event in Oklahoma City.

The chapter’s banquet, titled Faith in Freedom, will celebrate eight years of defending the rights of Oklahoma Muslims and working to increase understanding of Islam and Muslims in Oklahoma.

The group says it works to break down barriers that lead to intolerance and misunderstanding among some members of the public.
