ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) - Federal prosecutors say a 53-year-old former New York state tax department employee has been sentenced for bilking the Internal Revenue Service out of tens of thousands of dollars.

Authorities say Patricia Alfieri of Schenectady was sentenced in federal court in Albany to 41 months in prison and ordered to play more than $47,484 in restitution to the IRS.

Alfieri pleaded guilty in December to mail fraud and filing a false return after admitting she mailed 65 bogus checks totaling more than $3.6 million to the IRS while she was a state Department of Taxation and Finance employee. The IRS sent her more than $87,000 overpayment refunds she wasn’t due.

Officials say she also admitted that she filed a false income tax return, over-reporting her federal income tax withholding and fabricating home mortgage interest and real estate tax payments.
