WASHINGTON (AP) - District of Columbia Mayor Vincent Gray wants to build a new, $300 million hospital to replace the city-owned hospital east of the Anacostia River.

Gray says United Medical Center, which the city took over in 2010, is “a money pit for district taxpayers.” The city has provided $160 million in subsidies to UDC over the last decade.

The Democratic mayor says building a new hospital would be more expensive in the short term but would have greater long-term advantages than continuing to renovate the existing hospital.

His budget proposal for the upcoming fiscal year will include $20 million for the design of the new hospital. The $300 million for its construction would be funded in subsequent years. Gray is seeking re-election in next week’s Democratic primary.
