WASHINGTON (AP) - Museum officials say the Smithsonian’s National Air and Space Museum has reopened after being evacuated when a suspicious briefcase was found near an unconscious person in one of the galleries.

District of Columbia police spokesman Officer Araz Alali said Wednesday that the unconscious person is receiving medical treatment.

Smithsonian spokeswoman Becky Haberacker says all visitors and staff were evacuated onto the National Mall about 12:45 p.m. She says streets on both sides of the museum were closed.

The museum said in a tweet shortly after 3 p.m. that the package had been cleared and the museum was open to visitors.
