SHAW AIR FORCE BASE, S.C. (AP) - An Air Force captain from Shaw Air Force Base near Sumter who touched off a five-week search across the Southeast has pleaded guilty to desertion.
The Sumter Item reported (https://bit.ly/1iwDWpH) that Capt. Robbie Williams told his court martial he knew he was doing wrong when he decided not to return to his job at Shaw on Dec. 23rd. Williams said if he had not been arrested weeks later in Alabama, he would not have returned.
Williams was sentenced to four months in prison and will be dismissed from the service once his sentence is served. Williams told judge Col. William Muldoon he suffered from anxiety, depression and alcoholism at the time he decided not to return to work organizing communications between airmen overseas and the base command.
