A man shot and killed a U.S. sailor and then was shot and killed himself by security forces at the Naval Station Norfolk in Virginia, a military spokeswoman said.

The spokeswoman, Terri Davis, said the shootings aboard the USS Mahan destroyer occurred just before midnight on Monday, Fox News reported. Ms. Davis declined to give details.

She didn’t say if the civilian had permission to be aboard the vessel and refused to release the names or ages of the two men.

The base went into lockdown mode shortly after the shooting. That lockdown has since been lifted, and sailors were told to report to duty on Tuesday, Fox News said. Security officials, meanwhile, are continuing their investigation.
