WASHINGTON (AP) - A new poll shows District of Columbia Mayor Vincent Gray in a statistical dead heat with his top challenger one week before the city’s Democratic mayoral primary.

The poll released Tuesday by The Washington Post (https://tinyurl.com/msg7tuo) shows D.C. Councilmember Muriel Bowser with support from 30 percent of likely voters, and Gray with 27 percent. The margin of error for likely voters was 6.5 percentage points, making the race a statistical tie.

Gray had maintained a lead in previous polls.

Two weeks ago, federal prosecutors said Gray knew about an illegal “shadow campaign” that benefited his 2010 mayoral bid.

The poll was conducted from Thursday through Sunday, and respondents were reached on both landlines and cellphones. Of the 863 registered Democrats reached in the poll, 391 described themselves as likely voters.
