CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (AP) - The investigator looking into academic fraud at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill says he expects to meet with the reading specialist who has questioned the literacy level of athletes being admitted to the school.
In a statement sent Tuesday night to The Associated Press, Kenneth Wainstein said he wants to hear Mary Willingham’s “firsthand experiences with student-athletes” as well as her observations about their “educational experience” at the school.
UNC hired the former U.S. Justice Department official to conduct a review of fraud in the formerly named African and Afro-American Studies Department, including no-show classes with significant athlete enrollments.
In an interview with HBO Real Sports that aired Tuesday night, Willingham said those classes were designed to keep athletes eligible despite many reading at below-grade levels.
