CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (AP) - People seeking city jobs in Charlottesville no longer have to reveal on their applications whether they’ve been convicted of a felony.
The city has removed a question about prior felony convictions from its job applications.
Mayor Satyendra Huja tells media outlets that the question could discourage some ex-offenders from applying for a job with the city. He says the city is committed to giving ex-offenders a second chance.
The city will continue to conduct background checks for criminal history prior to making an offer of employment.
State-mandated hiring restrictions remain in place for positions in social services and the police department.
