LAS CRUCES, N.M. (AP) - A $1 million donation will help New Mexico State University fund installation of synthetic turf at its football stadium.

University officials announced Tuesday that businessman Stan Fulton, a longtime supporter of the school, made the donation.

The total cost of the project is estimated at $1.37 million.

NMSU student leaders have pledged $250,000 in student activity fees to the project while university funds will cover the remaining cost.

The NMSU Board of Regents voted 5-0 last week to approve the project to replace the natural grass field at Aggie Memorial Stadium.

The New Mexico Higher Education Department and the New Mexico Board of Finance still must approve it.

If final approval is received, university officials hope to have the synthetic turf installed by the Aug. 28 home opener.
