CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (AP) - The University of Virginia plans to hold a memorial service this week for Dr. Richard Edlich, who founded the school’s Burn and Wound Healing Center.
The university says Edlich died in Brush Prairie, Wash., on Christmas Day. He was 74.
Edlich came to the University of Virginia School of Medicine in 1972 for a plastic surgery residency. He was a professor emeritus when he left in 2001.
He served as U.Va.’s director of Emergency Medical Services and helped to develop an emergency medical system throughout Virginia.
The university says Edlich was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 1985. The National Multiple Sclerosis Society honored him for his work to improve access for people with disabilities.
The memorial service will be held at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday in the McKim Hall auditorium.
