Will McKamey, a freshman Navy football player, has fallen into a coma after collapsing on the field during a weekend practice in Annapolis, Md.
Mr. McKamey, 19, took a hit during practice, fell to the ground and was ultimately airlifted to Maryland Shock Trauma Center where medical staff performed surgery for a brain clot, the Bleacher Report said.
His mother, Kara, and father, Randy, have since sent out updates via social media.
Tweeted dad Randy: “All I can say is Just pray!” He followed that with another: “Not sure I have the strength to go through this again.”
And his mother, Kara, put on Facebook, post surgery: “There is no new news. We still have only small responses from Will. … It amazes me how this one kid is touching so many … from coast to coast. Our God is using Will for a huge platform right now. … Pray for the Navy football players and coaches as well, they are all here and doing everything in their power to pull Will through.”
A writer with CapitalGazette.com said doctors had reported some improvement. On Twitter, he wrote: “Latest report on Navy football player Will McKamey late last night was that he was breathing on his own, which is an encouraging sign.”
Mr. McKamey attended Grace Christian Academy in Knoxville Tenn., and was twice named to the All-State roster. In 2012, he collapsed on the field during a two-point conversion and was forced to spend several days in intensive care at a Chattanooga hospital, the Bleacher Report said.
