German police are actively seeking the identity of the guilty party, or parties, who committed at least 15 flamingo kills at Frankfurt Zoo while they slept — beheading some of them.
The kills were conducted in two separate nighttime attacks, The Associated Press reported.
Zoo workers found nine of the pink birds’ mutilated bodies on Friday and six more on Saturday. But on Monday, Frankfurt Zoo Director Manfred Niekisch said enough was enough — investigators were taking steps to root out the killer.
Of course, it could just be a fox, Mr. Niekisch admitted, AP reported.
Bite marks found on the birds’ bodies show that the attacks may have come from animals, not humans. Or, he added, the bite marks could simply show that the flamingos were already dead when animals struck, AP said.
He also clarified that guards may not have been aware of either attack because flamingos normally don’t cry out when they’re assaulted.
