HOLLAND, Mich. (AP) - The effort to raise $2.1 million for restoration of the Windmill Island Gardens in downtown Holland has received a boost from the Richard and Helen DeVos Foundation.
The Grand Rapids Press (https://bit.ly/1gqr9GE ) reports that the foundation has donated $250,000 toward renovations of the gardens, which include the 252-year-old DeZwaan windmill.
Holland Finance Director Tim Vagle says that brings the amount of money raised so far to about $1.25 million.
Restoration of the DeZwaan windmill wrapped up in the fall, and efforts continue for other island projects. They include restoration of the Amsterdam street organ and carousel.
Holland officials have approved plans to turn over operation of Windmill Island Gardens to a nonprofit group by 2016.
