YOUNGSTOWN, N.Y. (AP) - A memorial ceremony is being held in western New York on the 13th anniversary of the recovery of the bodies of two U.S. Coast Guardsmen killed in the line of duty.

Petty Officer 2nd Class Scott Chism and Seaman Chris Ferreby were assigned to Coast Guard Station Niagara, located on the Niagara River near where it empties into Lake Ontario at Youngstown.

On March 23, 2001, they and two other Coast Guardsmen were patrolling along the U.S.-Canada border when their 21-foot response boat hit a 4-foot wave, ejecting all four crewmembers from the vessel.

The other two crewmembers were rescued from the 36-degree water. The bodies of Chism and Ferreby were found the next day.

Monday morning’s memorial ceremony will be conducted by Capt. Brian Roche, commander of Coast Guard Sector Buffalo.
