RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - The N.C. Department of Transportation is about to begin work on a project to add 11 miles of a second track on the Norfolk Southern line between Salisbury and Kannapolis.
The $19.9 million project is part of the Piedmont Improvement Program, a series of projects to improve the rail corridor between Raleigh and Charlotte for freight and passenger trains. The project also includes upgrading some railroad crossings and permanently closing others
A statement from the department said construction of a second track will allow trains to pass each other more easily, which will in turn improve travel times for trains along the Raleigh-to-Charlotte corridor. Closing and upgrading crossings will help better separate vehicle and train traffic, improving safety.
The project starts Monday. It’s expected be complete in November 2016.
