Tax collectors could get pay increases of $6,500

JACKSON, Miss. (AP) - Mississippi county tax collectors and deputy tax collectors could get pay boosts up to $6,500 a year.

Gov Phil Bryant signed Senate Bill 2505 March 13. It allows tax collectors and deputies to get a $2,000 yearly raise for completing a first stage of official training and another $2,000 raise for completing a second phase. If collectors complete a third phase of training, they would get an additional $2,500 raise.

The raises are effective Oct. 1.

Now, depending on the value of all property in a county, collectors make between $41,500 and $64,000 a year. Anyone who serves as tax collector and assessor receives $5,000 more.

Bryant must decide by Monday whether to sign House Bill 1409, increasing sheriffs’ pay. Lawmakers are negotiating over a bill increasing county supervisors’ pay.
