PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - Rhode Island authorities have awarded grants worth $16,850 to organizers of local Earth Day cleanup projects, saying the initiative seeks to highlight the value of the environment and recognize the importance of people improving the quality of life in their communities.

The 38 grants are benefiting nonprofit groups and municipalities involved in community cleanup projects. The funds may be used to pay for cleanup supplies, hauling fees, local Earth Day celebrations, educating the public about environmental issues and attract volunteers to help cleanup.

The state Department of Environmental Management announced the funding, in partnership with the Rhode Island Resource Recovery Corporation, which owns the state’s main landfill.
