SURPRISE, Ariz. (AP) - The Texas Rangers have assigned infielder Brent Lillibridge to minor league camp and released Jose Contreras, the 42-year-old right-hander they had already said wouldn’t make the team.

Those moves were made Saturday, the when the team also settled on a closer and another starting pitcher.

Tanner Scheppers, who last season in his first full major league season was one of the game’s top setup guys, will this year open in the starting rotation. He pitched six innings in his last spring start Friday.

The Rangers also have tabbed former All-Star Joakim Soria as their closer.

Alexi Ogando, another former reliever who has been a starter for the Rangers, likely will pitch in a setup role this season.
