PHOENIX (AP) - Phoenix police are searching for a suspected shoplifter who nearly dragged an officer while fleeing in his car.

Sgt. Tommy Thompson says a serial shoplifter was reported Friday night at Wal-Mart near Happy Valley Road and Interstate 17.

Thompson says an officer pursued the suspect, who left on foot and jumped a wall to get to his car.

They say the officer punched through the driver’s side window and became entangled.

Thompson says the officer managed to free himself while the suspect drove in reverse.

He says the officer fired one shot as the car drove toward him but is not sure if the suspect was hit.

The officer was treated for injuries to his hand.

The suspect is described as being black, approximately 30 years old and 240 pounds.
