ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) - A Brooklyn-based joint New York Army and Air National Guard unit that specializes in identifying chemical, biological and radiological weapons is getting a new commander.
Officials at state National Guard headquarters in suburban Albany say Maj. Ben Genthner of Schaghticoke (SKAT’-ih-kohk) in Rensselaer (rehn-suh-LEER’) County will take command of the 24th Weapons of Mass Destruction Civil Support Team in April.
The Fort Hamilton-based unit provides support to local, state and federal law enforcement entities in the New York metropolitan area.
Genthner currently serves as the deputy commander of the New York National Guard’s 2nd Civil Support Team based at Stratton Air National Guard Base in Schenectady County.
He joined the Army in 1994 and was commissioned as a second lieutenant in 2001. He has served tours in Iraq and Korea.
