MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Connor Gaarder scored twice in the first period as UND beat Western Michigan 5-0 on Saturday in the third-place game at the National Collegiate Hockey Association Frozen Faceoff.

Gaarder scored twice in the first 10 minutes of the game to light a fire in North Dakota (23-13-3), which was shutout 3-0 by Miami in Friday’s semifinals.

Gaarder got his first goal just 1:42 into the game against the Broncos and scored again at 10:27.

North Dakota poured it on in the third period, getting three goals in a span of 3:53. Jordan Schmaltz, Paul LaDue and Rocco Grimaldi found the net for UND. LaDue’s power-play goal was the only one in six chances by UND.

UND goalie Zane Gothberg had 25 saves for his second shutout of the year against the Broncos. Frank Slubowski also made 24 stops for Western Michigan (15-20-3).
