CHICAGO (AP) - Susanne Atanus won the Republican Party’s nomination to challenge Illinois 9th District Democratic Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky in November, but she won’t have the support of GOP leaders.

Cook County Republican Organization Chairman Aaron Del Mar says Atanus should drop out of the race because “her behavior, comments and decisions do not reflect that of the Cook County Republican Party.”

Atanus raised eyebrows in January when she linked same-sex marriage and civil unions to autism, dementia and tornadoes.

Del Mar told the Arlington Heights Daily Herald (https://bit.ly/1oH67EV) he is offended by her comments.

Atanus defeated David Earl Williams, who says he was defeated by Democrats taking Republican ballots and voting for Atanus.

Atanus says she has reached out to GOP leaders since Tuesday’s primary and believes she will defeat Schakowsky.
